I attended myriad workshops and panels about grants, budgets, art history. But what was most exciting were the panels about activist and socially engaged art. Artists and researchers shared information from around the world...and most importantly shared encouragement and source materials.
The source materials I am making the most use of right now are:

Hope in the Dark, a book by Rebecca Solnit
This is an Uprising, a book by Mark and Paul Engler
From Rebecca Solnit: "Inside the word emergency is emerge; from an emergency new things come forth. The old certainties are crumbling fast, but danger and possibility are sisters."
While these political times feel like an emergency, and probably are an emergency...these times are also cracking open the chrysalis of quiet, allowing you and I to emerge, spread our wings and do the hard, steady work of rebuilding our communities around our pledge to civil discourse. As I watch people organizing, each around their most passionate needs, I am filled with a growing sense of hope.
